Steven
Cooper, a former resident of the NWT and Nunavut, was admitted to the Northwest Territories Bar in 1989, to the Alberta Bar in 1991 and to the Nunavut Bar in 1999. He was made a partner at
AWOC in 1997. Steven articled in Hay River, NWT and practiced there for
eight years primarily in the areas of civil, criminal, administrative
and municipal law. Since then he has traveled, practiced and worked
extensively in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Steven practices
Aboriginal law, corporate and commercial litigation, administrative and
tribunal law, employment law, and assists clients with sexual and other
abuse claims. He is also a member of the Baxter National Class Action
consortium negotiation committee that helped negotiate the five billion
dollar national Residential School settlement.

Mr.
Cooper was, in 2002, one of only six Canadians invited to attend the
American Bar Association Annual Law Tech Conference in Chicago, an
event at which he was asked to speak. As well, Steve is a member of and a
regular participant in various online law tech forums and has lectured
for the Legal Education Society of Alberta in the field of client
service and technology. He also was editor-in-chief of the Nunavut Bar
Admission course materials which as a whole was written by AWOC staff.
Mr. Cooper has argued before the NWT Workers Compensation Board for
compensation for Hunters and Trappers resulting in policy changes
allowing for full coverage for injured hunters and trappers. He has
argued before all Courts in Alberta and the NWT as well as before the
Nunavut Court of Justice. As counsel for the Alberta College of
Paramedics he has prosecuted disciplinary complaints against members
and written for the Association's professional journal.
Over the years, Steven has held various positions on committees and
boards. He was a member of the Editorial Board of NWT Reports,
Chairperson of the South Slave Divisional Board of Education,
Chairperson of the Legal Services Board of the NWT and Vice-Chairperson
of the Hay River and Area Community Education Authority. Currently he
is a volunteer with the Edmonton Radial Railway Society, a longstanding
member of the Elite Tae Kwon Do club in Sherwood Park and volunteers in
local schools doing educational presentations on Nunavut. In 2010 Steve was appointed Vice Chair of the Indigenous Rights Committee of the International Bar Association.
